WRITING

I like to read. During summer vacations when it was too hot to go outside to play in the park, I would sit down on the cool marble floor with a glass of lemonade and read story books. I enjoy reading about treasure hunts and adventure. I like science fiction comics too. My uncle who was visiting us from Shimla had brought me a few books written by Ruskin Bond. He is an Anglo-Indian author who lives in the hills and writes children stories. The books had no pictures or drawings and I was a bit disappointed but I liked the stories. I read out these stories to my younger sister before we go to bed. She cannot read on her own yet and likes how I tell her these stories with sounds and actions.
WORKING WITH LANGUAGE II
Question 1: Read these columns about careers in environment, that is, working to keep our world - the land, air, water and the people, animals and plants - safe from natural and man- made dangers. Check out the personality profiles needed to be successful at different kinds of careers in the environmental field. Find out whether you are more adventurous than your partner, or whether your partner is a better inquirer than others. You may wish to prepare a personality profile of yourself/your partner. In groups, attempt some of the activities suggested at the end.

SPEAKING
Question 1: Why does Radha's mother tell her that it is not suitable for girls to climb trees? Find points to agree with Radha or her mother. Plan what you will say by making notes like this:

Now divide the class into two groups. Present to the rest of the class the opinion of Radha who thinks there is no harm in girls climbing trees and of her mother who thinks girls should not do this.

Radha thinks girls should be able to climb trees because it is fun. She likes climbing the mango tree in the outside her home and feels like she rules the world when she is up in the tree. Climbing trees makes keeps one strong and active.
Radha's mother thinks it is not sensible for girls to climb tree because they might fall down and hurt themselves badly. She thinks girls are better off playing on the ground that climbing trees.
Question 2: Sit in a circle in that you can see each other. Each one must talk to complete the following sentence in his own way.

What makes me very angry is when people don't obey safety rules. These rules are for our safety and of those around us, not obey them put us in danger. The other day when we were coming to school in the morning, the school bus conductor had asked everyone to remain in their seats until the bus had come to halt in front of the gate but my friend in the back had pushed himself to the front to get down first while the bus was still moving. When the bus stopped at the gate, the boy lost his balance and fell on his face breaking two of his front teeth. The other children in the bus had a good laugh, I was angry at him for making a fool of himself, the teacher scolded him and he was sorry that he had not followed the safety instructions.
