The scene shows development in another minor subplot, involving three comical characters: Stephano, Trinculo and Caliban. A wicked plot is being brewed by the three masterminded by Caliban, who suggests that they should enter Prospero's cave while he is asleep and stab him. He promises that Stephano will become the king of the island, and he can marry Miranda. Ariel has overheard the entire conversation and becomes aware of their wicked plan. He then plays some strange music at this time, and Stephano becomes slightly apprehensive, but Caliban assures him that the island is full of such noises and he need not feel afraid.
Critical Analysis of The Tempest Act 3 Scene 2
There is Sparallelism drawn against the other plot planned against Alonso by his brother. Just as Antonio influences Sebastian, Stephano is influenced by Caliban. Both are planning to snatch power, which is one of the driving forces of play.Further light is thrown on the character of Caliban, who reveals himself as a revengeful creature. He wants to escape from the tyranny of Prospero but is ready to follow another master. This shows the mentality of some colonized people, who are willing to be subjugated by a superior power. Caliban is seen as a master of cunningness when he makes the plan for the murder of his master.
The scene is also full of humour with the constant bickering that takes place between Caliban and Trinculo. Stephano's air of importance under the influence of drinks and flattery of Caliban, throw light on human foibles and follies and elicit laughter from us. Ariel plays mischief by calling Caliban a liar, but Caliban feels this is spoken by Trinculo and this misunderstanding is a source of humour.
